Biography
Richard was born in Bury, and apart from his time at university has lived in the Borough all his life. He has represented St Mary's ward on Bury Council since 2007, and has been active in local campaigns for a number of years. He has fought to save local schools from the threat of closure, and has led the Liberal Democrat fight against local post office closures in Bury, and the fight to save local maternity provision in Bury. He was also instrumental in the campaign against Congestion Charging in Manchester.
Richard has represented Bury residents on Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, and is a member of a number of Bury Council committees. He is the Lib Dem spokesperson for Resource and Performance on Bury Council.
Richard obtained a degree in Law from the University of Birmingham, but decided against a career in the profession, preferring instead to work to improve public services. Working first as a public sector auditor, Richard then worked as an officer at a large urban Borough Council, and played a large role in that Council's improvement from a weak to a good Authority. Subsequent to his election to Bury MBC, Richard moved to the NHS, where he now works for a Mental Health Trust which delivers services to Bury.
Outside of work, Richard has been a volunteer at a local Hospital Radio station since 1999. This originally sparked an anthusiasm for radio presenting, which led to stints as a writer and producer at several local commercial radio stations. Richard has since mellowed though, and is content to be back at the hospital now, helping the patients!
Richard keeps a website at www.richardbaum.net, including a blog which has twice been shortlisted for the "Best Blog by an Elected Liberal Democrat" at the Lib Dem Blog of the Year awards.
Richard is proud to have the chance to fight for the people of Bury North - his home town - and will continue to fight for better local services for the people of Bury.
