When do you think the Prime Minister should call a general election? And do you think the Labour party should appoint a new leader to replace Gordon Brown before the general election so that voters who do not want the Conservatives to get back into power can vote for a truly NEW Labour government?

Ambitous cabinet ministers should stop jostling to win the poisoned chalice of leading a vanquished Labour party and concentrate on “mastering the recession”, John Denham, skills secretary, has said. www.ft.com/cms/s/0/45b80c18-04ef-11de-8166-000077b07658.html

If an ambitious young cabinet member is thinking in these terms he is not fit to be leader. The government is dealing with an unusual difficulty in the world of finance. The sort of leader who might be desirable for the future will be offering serious thoughtful support Moreover GB is very unlikely to go before the next election. He has more experience and more international authority than any newcomer would have.

It would be political lunacy to go for the leadership now. Is it 2/3rds of people would prefer to see ANYONE leading Labour rather than GB? It would have to be Jack Straw, an old timer whose willing to fall on his sword: John Prescott?

If I was a young cabinet member I would defiinitely do a John Major - ie call in sick for the duration/plead prior commitments or something - political suicide to go for the leadership now. Labour likely to lose so need a night watchman. Only other strategy would be to do a Granta - a Brown-Blair type pact with say a Jack Straw with the understanding of support now in return for him making way for me in time for the election after this.

Does Gordon Brown have a single saving grace that will save him from being considered the worst Prime Minister in history?

If GB goes before the next election, who has the best chance of winning for Labour, or is a wannabe Labour leader better off waiting for GB to lose in 2010 and then hoping to get back in after 4 yrs? Looks like GB needs a miracle to get back in. Not an easy decision for an ambitious young cabinet member.

Suspect that I would let Gordon go down at the helm. You stand up for leader now the chance of winning is so low that, even if you win, all you may do is replicate William Hague's career. I think you have to hope that the recession is so deep that the Tories win by a small margin and then fall apart in first term.
