Biography

Paul was born in Dallington, Northampton, and went to two local schools before passing the entrance exam for Northampton Town & County Grammar School for Boys (now Northampton School for Boys). For the past eleven years, he has been Technical Director of a company which specialises in development, testing and accreditation of specialist protective equipment. He also lectures internationally and has been published in technical reference books, is also Chair of the British Standards Committee for protective equipment for the police and the European Standards Committee for sports protection. He acts as technical advisor to a specialist committee of the Association of Chief Police Officers of England and Wales. In 2006, Paul became involved in a protest campaign in Northampton to prevent destruction of historic parkland. In May 2007, he stood for election to Northampton Borough Council, in West Hunsbury Ward, and was elected at his first attempt, increasing both number and share of the vote above that achieved by the previous Liberal Democrat councillor, Jill Hope. Subsequently, Paul was one of 16 Liberal Democrat Councillors to be selected for the second cohort of the Local Government Association's ?Next Generation? leadership programme.
