My Priorities
As your MP in Battersea I will champion change that works for you. This is our chance to build a fairer Britain from the ashes of a government that took us into Iraq, into a recession and into the worst Westminster scandal since the Tory sleeze of the 1990s. I am in politics to make a difference for real people. I care deeply about embracing diversity, community building and tackling social inequality.
We have some important issues to solve here in Battersea. Let’s start afresh and do it together”
Don’t let our young people go to waste
Far too many young people are out for work and have nowhere to turn to. Layla Moran says this a tragic waste of human potential. She wants paid work or paid work experience to be available immediately for under-25s at a rate set higher than the job seekers’ allowance.
Layla will also work with local businesses so that they are not left out of pocket by offering apprenticeship schemes for local people.
The Liberal Democrats will fund more Foundation Degrees and vocational training schemes with on the job experience.
Fair access to schools
As a teacher, Layla Knows that schools are the beating heart of any community. Attending a good local school is important not just for a child’s future, but also for bringing people together. In a borough where transport is an issue for many, asking young families to make a long trek across London is unfair. This problem has been brushed under the carpet for too long by the council.
Layla would campaign for the council to follow a clear strategy for providing an adequate number of places in good local community schools.
Revive the local economy
Layla Moran will stand up for local businesses and entrepreneurs. The Liberal Democrats would force banks to lend responsibly again, fight for sensible business rates and introduce Local Enterprise Funds connecting local investors to local business.
Big business should not have an unfair influence on developments like Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station. The Liberal Democrats would implement a local competition test to maintain a healthy mix of local and national businesses.
Change our politics
The MP’s expenses scandal showed us that we need to change the way politics is done in this country. Layla wants to bring back accountability for your politicians to the community, where it belongs.
As your Liberal Democrat MP Layla be visible and open with you. She would host meetings with residents, community leaders and politicians to consider important local issues like schools, transport and youth unemployment. She would publish regular newsletters and publish all her expenses online.

Family
My family are very important to me . I am the eldest of four children as well as being the eldest grandchild on both sides.
My parents met doing their masters at Wye College and I was born in Hammersmith. We moved to Belgium when my father began working for the European Union.
The whole family is international. My dad is British and my mother is Palestinian. I have Greek, American and Swedish cousins and we have lived in Belgium, Ethiopia Jamaica and Jordan.
Education and Career
As you can probably imagine, having such a mobile childhood was an amazing but also challenging experience. When I was eleven we moved to Jamaica and, in the absence of a good school, I went to boarding school in Brighton for some educational stability. From there I attended Imperial College to do a degree in Physics.
After university I moved back to Brussels and serendipitously a Physics teaching job came up at the International School of Brussels. I took it not knowing what else to do and fell in love with teaching. I spent four wonderful years there during which time I got my PGCE from Brunel University before moving back to London for good to do my MA in Comparative Education at the Institute of Education.
Now, I work at an International School near Oxford Circus. As I live in Clapham Junction, the constituency is my home. I care deeply about local issues because I have a history and roots here. I even lived for a while in the Tower Blocks near Battersea Park Rail during university.
Interests
All through my life I have had a passion for music. I play the cello and sing to grade 8 level and also play classical guitar. For exercise and fun I have recently begun to Swing Dance (1930-40s dancing) and like to jog around London’s parks.
