My Priorities

The Ashfield Labour party is open to all local people who want to fight for a fairer Britain.

As members we can make a difference in political life both locally and nationally. Labour are the only alternative to the Conservatives at national level and as the county elections have illustrated when Labour is weakened in Ashfield the Tories can take control.

Local events have shown Tory control has led to tax cuts for the rich at the expense of the most vulnerable in our county as vital services have been withdrawn. The Liberals cannot challenge the Tories at both county and national level. The period of Liberal rule of Ashfield District council was a disaster and has left the authority with a burden of debt and the lowest possible 1 star rating.

By getting involved in the Labour party you can help shape the direction of the party and the politics at both local and national level. Labour is a broad church and has its roots firmly rooted in defending the working class and working class communities like ours. Socialist principles such as the aim to make society fairer for the many and not for the few drive us forward.

It is easy to forget what Britain was like in 1997 - the NHS on its knees, schools crumbling, crime doubled and millions of families still scarred by unemployment over three million and interest rates still recovering from hitting 15 per cent on Black Wednesday. While we know that everything is not perfect now, look at the new developments at Kings Mill, the improvement in schools, trains, benefits to our OAP's, stable interest rates.
