What is your party's response to the existing and forecast level of public debt in the UK?

Labour - 12th Jan, 2009

Responding to the Tories' poster campaign, Gordon Brown says: "The Conservatives use the example of children. They would not raise child benefit to help that child and we are raising child benefit. They would not invest in Sure Start to help children in their infant years and we’re doing that. They would not have supported the maternity and paternity leave that helps mothers and fathers, they would not support the additional investment that we’re making in young people particularly in nursery education. Now we are investing in young children and I do not see why children should pay the price for a global financial crisis that is a banking crisis. We should invest because that is the one way to take ourselves through this difficulty and if I may say so every other country in the world is recognising what the Conservatives are failing to recognise, that when markets fail and banks fail the government has got a duty by its people to step in and not cut public expenditure, not cut child benefit, not cut apprentices, not cut investment in children or in families.”
