Liberal Democrats - 18th Jun, 2009 "Given the grave doubts about the Home Office’s claim that Tasers are not lethal, they should not be used on children. Police officers must be able to protect themselves, but these weapons have killed more than 300 people in the United States and should not be issued to untrained officers. We need an in-depth inquiry into the use of Tasers before they become commonplace on British streets. We must not slide down a slippery slope towards fully-armed, US-style policing." Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary Chris Huhne

Liberal Democrats - 18th Jun, 2009 The Liberal Democrats do not believe faith-based schools should be abolished. We support freedom for schools, pupils and parents, including allowing parents to continue to choose faith-based schools within the state-funded sector, and allowing the establishment of additional faith schools. This policy also includes requiring all existing state-funded faith schools to come forward within five years with plans to demonstrate the inclusiveness of their intakes, with local authorities empowered to oversee and approve the delivery of these plans, and to withdraw state-funded status where inclusiveness cannot be demonstrated. We seek to end the opt-out from employment and equalities legislation for staff in faith schools, except those responsible for religious instruction. We also believe that schools who choose to hold assemblies should ensure that any act of collective worship is optional for pupils who are old enough to decide for themselves and otherwise for parents.

Does your party agree with the conservative's policy paper to increase localism? Liberal Democrats - 18th Jun, 2009 “Rather than being radical, many of these proposals could have been copied straight from the Government’s agenda. The Tories only talk about localism when it suits them, and when they do they think it makes sense to force elected mayors on cities hand picked from Westminster. What this makes clear is that the Tories, like the Government, have no intention of reforming the grossly unfair Council Tax that they created. Rather than tinkering, the whole system should be scrapped and replaced with a fair tax based on the ability to pay.” Julia Goldsworthy , Shadow Communities and Local Government Secretary. Liberal Democrats - 18th Jun, 2009 “Compulsory sheep tagging will increase the input costs being placed on livestock producers, auction markets and abattoirs which could ruin the financial viability of the industry. The average wage for a sheep farmer is just £6,000 per year, which is as about as much as a tag reader is expected to cost. The UK is not alone in thinking that compulsory sheep tagging is both impractical and unworkable, but until recently the Government have been prepared to take the role of a backseat driver instead of leading the campaign for a voluntary system. I refuse to accept that this battle is lost, but it’s up to our Ministers to push for a voluntary system by taking a leading role in the campaign against compulsory sheep tagging. I’m hopeful that the coming meeting of ministers gives us a real chance to win this fight.” Tim Farron, Shadow Defra Secretary.
