Parliamentary Candidate for Thirsk and MaltonShadow Minister for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs

Anne lives in the Vale of York constituency near Thirsk with her husband John Harvey, who is a business executive. She was born in Edinburgh in 1954, educated at Harrogate Ladies College, and studied at the Universities of Edinburgh and Aarhus in Denmark.

After qualifying as a Scottish Advocate, Anne practised law in Edinburgh and Brussels and then worked for the Conservatives in the European Parliament.

Anne McIntosh's Experience

Anne fought Workington, Cumbria, for the Conservatives in the 1987 General Election and served as the Member of the European Parliament for North East Essex (1989-94) and North Essex and South Suffolk (1994-99), acting as Assistant Whip and Conservative Transport Spokesman.

After her election as the Member for the Vale of York in 1997, Anne was appointed to the House of Commons Environment, Transport and the Regions Select Committee, and the European Scrutiny Select Committee. In December 2000, she was elected to the Executive of the Conservative Backbench 1922 Committee, before being appointed a Shadow Minister for Culture, Media and Sport in 2001. In July 2002, Anne was appointed a Shadow Minister for Transport. In November 2003, she became a Shadow Minister for Environment & Transport.

In May 2005, Anne was appointed as Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, and in December 2005 was appointed Shadow Minister for Work & Pensions. In November 2006, Anne was appointed as a Shadow Minister for Education.

In July 2007, she was appointed as a Shadow Minister for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs.
